Women Smashing Patriarchy

By: Apostle Marilyn Brooks

For centuries, women have lived in a world built by and for men. The patriarchy, an entrenched system of male dominance, has dictated what we can achieve, how we should behave, and who we are allowed to be. But times are changing, and the walls of this archaic structure are beginning to crumble. Smashing the patriarchy isn’t just about anger or rebellion; it’s about liberation, empowerment, and rewriting the rules for a future where all women can thrive.

The patriarchy isn’t just about individual men holding power. It’s a systemic force embedded in our institutions, traditions, and even our subconscious. It manifests in wage gaps, gender-based violence, limited reproductive rights, and the constant undervaluing of women’s voices and labor.

Breaking it isn’t about flipping the hierarchy so women dominate men. It’s about dismantling the structures that perpetuate inequality and creating space for equity, respect, and individuality. It’s about freedom—not just for women, but for everyone trapped in the narrow definitions of gender roles.

As women, we’ve been conditioned to play small. We’ve been taught to smile when we’re uncomfortable, to prioritize others’ feelings over our own, to stay quiet in the face of injustice, and to measure our worth by how much we can sacrifice for others. Smashing the patriarchy requires us to unlearn these damaging lessons.

It’s not easy. Patriarchy doesn’t just live outside us—it takes up residence in our minds. Every time we doubt ourselves, apologize unnecessarily, or hesitate to demand more, we feel its grip. Smashing it means facing those inner voices with courage, learning to recognize our conditioning, and choosing to reclaim our power.
