Part 3

**They Do Not Care**

Beloved Community,

As we gather in this moment of urgency, it is imperative that we confront the staggering reality of the choices made by our fellow citizens. The truth is undeniable: those who cast their votes for Donald Trump have placed their faith in a man who has told over 34,000 provable lies during his presidency. How can we turn a blind eye to such deceit? The scriptures remind us, “Lying lips are detestable to the Lord, but those who deal faithfully are his delight” (Proverbs 12:22). And yet, here we stand, witnessing a troubling phenomenon where many have chosen to ignore the truth, voting for a man who embodies the very antithesis of integrity. They do not care!

Let us not forget the voices that warned us before his election in 2016. The Republicans themselves labeled him a habitual liar, a race-baiting, xenophobic bigot—a cheat. They spoke the truth, yet when the time came to choose, the voices of caution fell on deaf ears. The people who voted for him didn’t care! They turned a blind eye to the fact that Trump has been embroiled in over 4,000 legal battles since the 1970s, repeatedly cheating and defrauding those who trusted him. And still, they voted for him! They didn’t care! They ignored the dozens of women who bravely came forward with accusations of sexual assault and rape. They didn’t care! They brushed aside the fact that his mishandling of COVID-19 led to the tragic loss of over a million lives in our nation—lives that could have been spared had he not dismissed the pandemic as a “democratic hoax.” They do not care!

Yet, even after all this, they voted for him again in 2024. They turned a blind eye to his 34 felony convictions, his status as an adjudicated insurrectionist, and the civil case in which a judge declared him a rapist. They sold their souls to the devil for the fleeting promise of power and the false sense of security that comes from shared hatred. In their hearts, they have allowed hatred for their fellow man to blind them to the very values that Christ taught us—loving our neighbor, caring for the poor, and standing for justice. They do not care!

The reality is harsh: these individuals have become victims themselves, duped by the devil’s lies and the toxic rhetoric of Donald Trump. They have forgotten the teachings of Jesus, who called us to love unconditionally. They stand in stark contrast to what we know to be right, embracing instead the racism, misogyny, and homophobia that Trump has so shamelessly exhibited. Just like the people in Samuel’s time, they have chosen a king that reflects their deepest prejudices, and in doing so, they have forsaken their own best interests. They didn’t care!

“Because of what you wanted, you’ve lost what you had,” the Lord warned (1 Samuel 8). The people came to the prophet Samuel and demanded a king, saying, “Give us a king to govern us, like all the other nations” (1 Samuel 8:5). But God instructed Samuel to warn them, telling them the consequences of their choice—their king would take their sons, take their daughters, take their fields, and impose taxes upon them. Yet, even with the warning, the people responded, “We don’t care! We want a king!” And so, they got what they wanted. Now, look at what they’ve received. They have chosen King Donald Trump, and the rains of injustice have fallen upon us all, affecting not only those who opposed him but those who supported him as well. They do not care!

Through his executive actions, Trump has sought to undermine the very foundation of our democracy, attempting to strip away birthright citizenship—a right enshrined in our Constitution. He declared, “I don’t care what the Constitution says; I’m King Trump, and I’m above the law!” But let us take heart, for the courts have stood firm against such tyranny. Yet, he continues to wield executive orders, freezing vital federal assistance programs that are a lifeline for countless families. Food assistance, Medicaid, housing for homeless veterans—gone! Lives are at stake, people will die as a result of trumps executive orders! Now many of them are saying hold on wait a minute this affects me! Now many of his supporters now all the sudden they care. Why because it affects them! It’s funny how they don’t care about other people when bad things happen to those other people, but when it’s them, all the sudden they care. Some of them have come out crying and said I’m sorry I ever voted for him. I’m scared. I don’t know what to do. Well that goes back to first Samuel chapter 8 at the end of that chapter when God said after you made that choice in your day of trouble when you call to me, I will not answer you. You say that sounds harsh with the harsh reality is you didn’t care about people when you had the chance! You did this! You did this to others and the sad reality is you did it to yourself as well and as a result, we are all having to suffer for this. This is what happens when you don’t care about others. And I hear people ask the question well Bishop don’t you think that people can repent? And I reply by asking them do you know what that word means? It means to have a change of mind. So ask this question based on the condition of a person’s heart did they really have a change of mind or is it that they just became concerned one more time with themselves because it affected them? The sad reality is they still don’t care about these people that they referred to as other people. At the end of the day, it’s still about them and that is why that the Lord said and in your day of trouble when you call unto me, I will not answer you. And that came to me by Divine revelation from God. I’ve never heard that preached before that way.

But let us remember the cries of the people when Jesus entered Jerusalem, laying palm branches before him. They shouted “Hosanna,” not in praise, but in desperation for help! They were crying out, “Save us!” They laid down those palm branches in representation of the Maccabees, believing that Jesus would come as the hammer, the political savior who would liberate them from oppression. Yet, when he did not fulfill their expectations and instead chose a path of love and sacrifice, they turned on him. After Jesus was arrested, he was brought out before the people, and the question was asked: “Do you want Jesus or Barabbas?” The crowd chose Barabbas! They turned their backs on the one who embodied love and justice for the one who represented the status quo of oppression and hate. Today, we face a similar choice, as many have turned their backs on the teachings of Christ to embrace the false savior that is Donald Trump. They have rejected love, charity, and compassion, branding these virtues as “socialism” and “weakness.” They do not care!

This is not merely a political crisis; it is a spiritual one. The Republican Party has transformed into a cult-like following, where loyalty to Trump supersedes integrity, truth, and the very values that our faith espouses. They worship at the altar of power, refusing to speak out against the injustices that he perpetuates. They do not care!

History is repeating itself before our very eyes. From Samuel’s warning to the crucifixion of Jesus, to the rise of tyrants in our past, we stand at a crossroads. If we do not learn from the lessons of history, we are indeed doomed to repeat it. The time for action is now! We must rise up and confront this evil that dwells in the White House, driven not just by ambition and greed but by the forces of darkness that seek to divide and conquer. They do not care!

In our next and final part, we will explore the steps we can take to combat this evil, to reclaim our values, and to build a future grounded in love, justice, and unwavering faith. Together, we will rise against the storm, for we are called to be the light in the darkness, the voice for the voiceless, and the champions of justice!

With urgency and unwavering resolve,

Bishop Scott Grey, DTh.
